American Horror Story S8.03 — Surprise, witch
Spoilers below for American Horror Story S8.03 — Forbidden Fruit
“Yo dawg, we heard you liked American Horror Story so we American Horror Story-ed your American Horror Story so you could watch American Horror Story while you watch American Horror Story.” — Ryan Murphy, to all of us, when making this episode.
In his interview with Mallory (Billie Lourde), Langdon thinks he’s getting somewhere deep in her “dark corners” but she starts to feel uncomfortable and tries to leave. He grabs her arm (NEVER a good idea, dudes) and puts on his scariest Gollum-meets-Satan face, which she matches by exploding the fireplace behind him. Both of them taken aback, Mallory runs out.
Later, Langdon is upset so he’s casually cutting himself and creating a pentagram in his own blood, calling out to his father (Tate/Satan? Are we to believe that Tate is Satan or is it just that Langdon is the Antichrist so even though Tate is his biological (ghost) father, it’s actually Satan who he calls father?) for help. “I thought I’d destroyed them all, but one survived!” Then a bunch of snakes appear, which I think means Daddy was listening.
Meanwhile, Miriam & Venable are coming up with a diabolical plan to kill all of the residents (and then Langdon) and go off on their own to the Sanctuary (good luck with that). After a mysterious box of apples arrives on their doorstep (they don’t spend nearly enough time questioning this), they decide to poison the apples and feed them to the residents. Good thing they have all those snakes!
Billy Eichner, who somehow survived the blast, cancer, and cannibals hitched a ride with the apples, killed the giant guard, and made his way into Outpost 3. Luckily for him, he came right in time for the masquerade so no one could see his horrible nuclear fallout hair. After dancing with Coco for about a minute (she thought he was Langdon), she brings him back to her room and he stabs her in the face. “Happy Halloween, bitch!”
Unaware of what’s going on in Coco’s room, the party is giggling through an entire apple bobbing session. At Venable’s request, all of the residents eat their apples at once and, after an exceptionally long and graphic vomiting scene, die horrible deaths. Venable & Miriam then confront Langdon, who takes control over robot Miriam and has her shoot Venable. I didn’t think it was possible for all of the characters to die in episode 3, so I was impressed.
To comfort the crying robot, Langon explains he modeled Miriam after the woman who raised him and the only one who truly loved him. I’m pretty sure that is Constance, so hoping we get the return of Jessica Lange soon!
But, the best return happens at the end of the episode — the witches (Myrtle, Cordelia, and Madison) are back! They stride up (no masks needed) and pull Coco, Mallory, and Dinah from the wreckage of dead bodies. Our Supreme breathes life back into the girls and it looks like Misty is in Coco, Zoe is in Mallory, and Queenie is in Dinah. Surprise, bitch!
One note though: it seemed like Langdon knew Dinah. Is it possible that it’s not Queenie inside of her, but actually Marie Laveau (played by Angela Basset), the Voodoo Queen from Coven and they are secretly working together?
Looking forward to the face-off between the witches and the Antichrist, though I’m not sure it’ll be next episode.
