Spoilers below for Dexter: New Blood S1.02 — Storm of Fuck

Not surprisingly, the murder of a high profile seasonal resident of a tiny town in upstate New York is a lot harder to explain away than the murder of multiple murderers, sex offenders, and other undesirables in Miami. Dexter, you might be in trouble here, bud.

Oh and also your son who you abandoned when you faked your death is back and ready to mess everything up for you.

This second episode of the Dexter reboot dives into the 3 main storylines of the season:

  • Harrison and Dexter reconnecting
  • Dexter covering up the murder of Matt / the search for Matt
  • The kidnapping (and probable, eventual torture and murder) of young women

Let’s start with Harrison and Dexter.

We learn that Hannah died 3 years ago of cancer and once that happened, Harrison was sent to Miami where he bounced around a bunch of shitty foster homes. Also, when Hannah died, Harrison found a letter Dexter had sent her where Dexter said she should reach out to him if Harrison exhibited any “dark tendencies.”

Until Hannah passed away, Harrison thought that Dexter was dead. He cried himself to sleep each night missing his father. When he read the letter, he got angry and decided to search for Dexter. Harrison found him in Iron Lake because of a photo of Dexter on Instagram where one of his bowling teammates bragged that Dexter had bowled a 300. Bowling was always Dexter’s soft spot. (Remember when Doakes was onto Dexter? He would always follow him to and from the bowling alley).

Dexter promises to try his best with Harrison and Harrison agrees to stay for a bit. He also tells Angela that he’s “Jim’s” son so Angela is a little taken aback because Dexter never mentioned he had a son. Angela reveals that she adopted Audrey in an effort to get Dexter to open up more to her now. Good luck with that. This leads us to storyline 2 of this episode…

The murder/search for Matt.

At the end of last episode, we saw there were blood spots leading from the shed where Dexter killed Matt to the water. When Dexter walked out of the house in the morning, he noticed the blood and tried to clean it up. Then, the cops showed up and started using Dexter’s cabin as their headquarters for the search.

The incompetent police officer in charge of the drone broke it immediately, but when Dexter heard they were going to search the area where he Matt killed the deer, he offered to search for them with Harrison. They come up on the deer and Dexter sends Harrison back to get the cops. He picks up the rock that Matt fell on when Dexter hit him and then plants Matt’s glove by the highway.

When the cops return, some Seneca tribespeople are looking at the white buck carcass. They’re upset because the deer was killed on their land. Angela speaks with them and explains what is going on. We find out that she is Seneca and as the police chief, she is trying to help everyone. But, the Seneca don’t believe she’ll be able to do it and think she’ll have to choose sides eventually.

Things are looking good for Dexter. The glove is found and matches Matt’s pair that he wore to the store. The bullet matches the ammo Dexter sold him and it came from the gun he sold him. As the cops are clearing up the search, and Harrison, Audrey, and the rest of her friends come back from hanging out and not searching, Mr. Caldwell, Matt’s dad, arrives.

He implores the community to continue searching because Matt would have called him if he did something wrong. I’m guessing the last big mistake call Mr. Caldwell got was about the 5 people Matt murdered in the boating “accident.” He thinks Matt is still out there and he’s going to freeze if they don’t find him. The search continues. Dexter is pissed. The camera pans down beneath the fire pit and we see Matt’s head. So, Dexter buried him under the fire pit and not in the water. Is that better? We’ll see I guess.

The final storyline: Missing girls

Interspersed in the episode are scenes of the runaway girl from the first episode who Angela sent to the shelter. She looks like she’s in a hotel room and she has a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. She drinks the bottle and eats the strawberries, but then she gets sick. We see that she’s being watched by someone (is it the rich oil tycoon?).

She keeps waking up and going back to sleep while being watched. Finally, she gets up and looks around for her phone. She can’t find it and begins to get nervous. Then, she walks over to the door and realizes the knob is gone. She freaks out and sees the camera. She pulls over a chair and looks up at the camera, where she sees “You’re already dead” written below it. Awesome.

Random thoughts from the episode:

  • Harrison told Angela that his mom just died but he told Audrey that his stepmom died a few years ago and his mom died when he was a baby. It seems like Audrey and Angela aren’t that close, so maybe she won’t say anything to her mom, but not great to have such a mismatched story.
  • Is it the oil tycoon who is watching the kidnapped girls or is it someone we haven’t met yet?
  • When Audrey and Angela are fighting, Audrey says, “I’m not Iris!” I’m assuming Iris is Angela’s sister/cousin/friend/daughter/niece who went missing or was murdered?
  • Ghost Deb gets very physical with Dexter! I like it.
