Dexter: New Blood: S1.04 — H is for Hero

Tonight’s episode of Dexter was a return to season 4 greatness — literally. Trinity is back (kind of).

In the “previously on”, we reminisce over Audrey telling Harrison she’ll text him her top 5 murder podcasts. Obviously her favorite one is Merry Fucking Kill, which is the podcast created by Molly, who is currently in Iron Lake. The third episode of her show? The Trinity Killer.

Harrison listens to the episode and vividly hears about how his mother was murdered. Molly explains how the baby was in the bathroom when it happened and played in the blood until he was found. “How fucked up do you think that kid is now?” she asks.

In the next scene, there is a state of emergency at the school. Ethan, who we thought was going to end up shooting his classmates, “stabbed” Harrison and Harrison stabbed Ethan back in self-defense. However, Ethan is being carted off unconscious and Harrison has a tiny stab wound. Plus, Harrison is laying on the emotions a little too thick. Immediately, we knew he was lying.

Later, Dexter is helping Harrison change the bandage when he realizes the stab wound is incorrect (shoutout to my mom who recognized that immediately. She was premed at Penn for one semester!). He goes back to the scene of the crime with “Deb” and does a blood spatter analysis. Turns out, Harrison slashed Ethan and then stabbed himself to make the story seem real.

The cops believe Harrison, even though Ethan tells them exactly what happened. They do find guns in Ethan’s house and a kill list in his notebook, so it seems like it should be true. After taking a peek at the photo of Ethan’s wound, he realizes the knife is wrong. It’s too clean of a cut.

Dexter searches through Harrison’s stuff and finally finds a straight razor, which was the weapon that Trinity used to kill the women in the bathtubs, including Rita. Ah, poetic justice. And ah, Dark Passenger part 2. Seems like Dexter and Harrison are going to need to have a very serious conversation…and then maybe some new bonding experiences.

Meanwhile, Curt is still lying about FaceTiming with Matt and I’m starting to sense I was correct at why. We see him buddying up to another young woman who is in need of money and then at the end of the episode, he brings her to the same place where the last woman was held and later hunted.

That means he is definitely behind part of the kidnapping ring, but I’m not sure he is the only one. I think the oil baron is also part of it and maybe even other rich men in town. Curt brought Harrison a drone to thank him for “saving the town” — maybe he is trying to recruit Harrison to get young women.

Finally, Molly the podcaster and Angela the police chief decide to team up to help find the missing girls. Good, we’re going to get some traction on this. We also learn what I had said last week was true: Iris was Angela’s friend growing up and she went missing.

Looks like next week Dexter will have someone on his table — who will it be? Curt? He’s kind of the only person who makes sense, but we just found out his involvement in the kidnapping ring, so that seems like a weird time to kill him. I guess it could be someone from the past or someone we don’t know yet or a hallucination. We shall see!

All in all, pretty great episode. Really enjoying this season so far. Next week we’ll be halfway through and I think we won’t have too many more setup episodes like last week.
