Dexter: New Blood S1.05

Wow, what an ep! I think my brain has thoroughly exploded and I am loving it. Everything is blowing up around Dexter and that is really when the show feels like it is back to its original self.

In tonight’s episode, Dexter confronts Harrison about the straight razor and Harrison flips out. He goes to a party with the other kids from the kill list and drinks, takes ecstasy, and then ODs on “Oxy” (it’s actually fentanyl. Before he passes out, he tells Audrey that Dexter doesn’t believe him and that Jim Lindsay isn’t Dexter’s real name. Ruh roh.

Audrey calls 911 and Logan revives Harrison with NARCAN. When Dexter takes him home from the hospital, he tells him he’s only allowed to go to therapy and school. I’m sure that will work.

Meanwhile, Dexter sets to work getting vengeance. Logan told Dexter that Harrison’s “friend” got the pills from his brother who got them from some guy named Miles at a bar. Dexter goes to the bar and tries to drug Miles, but then Logan shows up. Dexter starts beating up Miles so that Logan will think he was just there to beat him up. When they go back to the police station, Dexter overhears where Miles gets his supply from and sees this guy’s address when he hugs the nosy receptionist.

Round 2 of Dexter trying to get vengeance. He shows up at the drug maker’s nasty house and gets to work. He sets up a kill room, but right before he can kill the guy, the cops show up! Except, there’s enough time for Dexter to get rid of the whole kill room setup, drug the guy into ODing, put his clothes back on him, and get out before the cops even enter. Classic Dexter, but we’ll let it slide.

At the end of last ep, we see Curt bringing his next victim (green-haired girl) to the secret room. He tells her she can stay there for free as long as she agrees to “pay it forward” later. She says yes, which is so dumb. Has this girl never seen a movie, TV show, book, or the news? Of course you cannot stay in this guy’s random room without giving anything to him. Come on!

When she realizes she is trapped, she decides to try a strip tease in front of the camera. This pisses Curt off because it goes against his ritual. By the way, also part of his ritual is coming to the bar, playing the song “Runaway”, and making the bartender/teacher dance with him. When green-haired girl starts her strip tease, Curt gets mad and tells her to stop. She doesn’t, so he closes his computer. She realizes he’s not watching her and pulls out a shattered piece of the mirror from under the bed.

When he finally opens the door, she doesn’t leave. Instead, she tells him to come down there and make her leave. When he does, she slashes him across the face, which does basically nothing, and he pushes her down the hall and out the door. He tries to get her to run across the field so he can hunt her but instead she rushes him and he shoots her in the head twice. Curt is very upset because “that’s not the way it’s supposed to be.”

Curt gives me Trinity vibes. I’d say it’s partially because he’s an old white man, but also the reliance on ritual and making everything “the way it should be.” It seems like Curt is trying to Harrison under his wing, which is a really interesting poetic justice since Trinity killed Rita. I like what they’re doing here.

I say that he’s trying to take Harrison under his wing because Harrison starts attempting to run away and makes it as far as Curt’s diner. Curt stops him and buys him dinner. He tells Harrison he’ll give him a job at the diner so he can make money before he runs away. Curt also talks to Harrison about “when you see red, instead do something kind for the person.” Weird advice from an obvious sociopath, but ok. There is something blooming here.

Will Curt kidnap Harrison? Unlikely, because I think he prefers young women. Will Curt use Harrison to bait these young women and then potentially even train him in the art of this weird kidnap/hunting thing? More likely. I hope Harrison will see that Dexter is the one who should train him to be a serial killer instead, but who knows?

The last storyline of the episode comes with Angela and Molly go to New York to see if they can catch up with Matt, who is “staying” at the Gramercy Hotel. Also, Angela wants to go to a missing persons conference (this isn’t a real thing, right?). And who is the keynote speaker at the conference? Motherfucking Angel Batista! Dan and I were screaming when we saw that lovable goof and his fedora.

In his speech, Angel talks about the Bay Harbor Butcher and finding patterns when people are missing (Butcher’s victims? Criminals, duh). Molly says she did a podcast on the Butcher and some people thought it was a cop at Miami Metro (almost right). After the talk, Angela and Angel talk about her missing girls. He tries to help her find the pattern, but when they can’t, he tells her to trust her gut. He says that they had a great cop at Miami Metro who always trusted her gut, especially with Trinity.

Angela asks if they can get her help on the case, but he says they can’t because she’s dead and so is her brother. Then, he says that he left behind a little boy named Harrison. RUH ROH! When Angela comes home, Audrey tells her what Harrison said. The episode ends when Angela prints out a copy of Dexter’s obituary!! BRAIN EXPLOSION!

General thoughts:

  • Ok yes, Dexter obviously has some ‘splainin to do. But, he’s Dexter and he gets out of sticky situations like this a lot. I definitely think he needs to be careful though because I’m a little worried that Molly’s vast knowledge of both Trinity and the Butcher are going to come back to bite him.
  • Looks like he’s stalking Molly in the preview for the next episode. It will be an extremely bad look if he kills her so I hope he is not stupid about this.
  • The Harrison stabbing his friend situation is nowhere near figured out. Does he have a Dark Passenger? Will Dexter teach him to the code? Maybe they will work together to take down Curt.
  • We’re halfway through the season and they are doing very well! Go team.
