Westworld S3.02 — Another simulation
Tonight’s Westworld felt like a remix of an episode from an earlier season (or that Rick & Morty ep when they were inside the simulation). The beginning follows Maeve as she discovers that she is, yet again, in another park. This time it is “Warworld,” truly the silliest name.
There is no reason to fully rehash what happened — basically, she realizes she is in the loop and Hector is trapped for good. Her nerdy lab tech friends don’t recognize her but Lee, who we all saw die last season, finds her and rescues her. He says he wants to take her to the Forge so she can reunite with her daughter, but when they arrive, he gets weird.
Maeve starts to realize something is up when he keeps asking her for the coordinates of the door to the host “afterlife.” She doesn’t know, but he keeps pushing her. It dawns on her that he is not actually Lee. Upon hearing this, Lee short circuits, which is to be expected, but Maeve also sees the environment around her glitch. That means that not only is Lee a simulation, but also the world is a simulation.
“So, where the fuck are we?”
The smartest host in the history of Westworld, Maeve makes short work of figuring it out. She glitches the entire world in a very cool scene where all of the hosts freeze with blood spurting out and bullets flying through the air and uses a tablet to find where she is in the real world.
Turns out, her brain ball is in a collection of other brain balls somewhere underground in Spain. She commandeers a robot to steal her brain and escape, but the robot doesn’t make it. Once again, Maeve wakes up somewhere new, but this time she is in the real world.
She meets Serac, the mysterious partner of the father of the schlubby guy Dolores dated for a hot sec in the last episode. He is currently the one who holds the power to the statistics-future-telling machine. Serac tells Maeve that he needs her help stopping Dolores from ending the world. She says no and tries to kill him, but he uses one of those buttons that Bernard has to freeze her.
The other storyline in this episode follows Bernard as he returns to Westworld (apparently it was in the South China Sea this whole time). He finds himself back at the little house where he spent so much time in season 1 and he is reunited with Ashley Stubbs (played by the much lesser known third Hemsworth brother). Stubbs, who we all figured out was a host last season, tried to kill himself but failed. Bernard brings him back to life.
Like Serac, Bernard knows Dolores is a danger to the human race and like Serac, Bernard wants Maeve’s help to stop her. But, Bernard doesn’t know where Maeve is because, well, she is with Serac. So, Bernard and Stubbs go on a little adventure through the Westworld labs, trying to find a clean tablet so Bernard can get “introspective” and check his code to see if Dolores put any bugs in there when she brought him back online. They find one and they happen to walk by a dragon from Thrones who I guess was a host the whole time.
Bernard gets midway through the history of last season while Stubbs fought off a bunch of his old coworkers, but then they have to go because Stubbs could only kill his friends for so long. But, Bernard has a lead — the schlubby guy from last episode — so Bernard & Stubbs (release date for their buddy cop movie TBD) set off to find him in a fishing boat. Good thing they are robots and don’t need to rest because otherwise it would probably take them a long time to row to get to him.
Next week, I assume we will see Bernard & Stubbs meet the schlubby guy, Maeve reluctantly interacts with Serac, and Dolores makes progress on her plans with the host version of the bodyguard. Plus, hopefully we will find out who she has in the Charlotte Hale body. Until then!
