Westworld S3.03 — Who am I?
The third episode of this season returns to the storyline that the first episode set up. Taking place mainly in “Los Angeles” and “San Francisco,” (I know it’s the future, but they didn’t even try to make these cities look like themselves), we follow Dolores, Caleb, and “Charlotte.”
The first scene takes place before everything else in this season (I assume — it is Westworld so time is always wonky). It shows Dolores explaining to the host inside of Charlotte what their new job is. Frustratingly, we still do know who the host is, only that Dolores said that they know her better than she knows herself. My guess from that line would be Teddy, but the way the host-inside-Charlotte acts makes me assume it’s not him.
From there, we follow “Charlotte” as she returns to work at Delos and to the life the real woman left behind. It seems like the host-inside-Charlotte was given a primer on her life (she knows her ex’s name, for example) but not all of her memories. This leads her to acting like a bad mom, which is kind of ok because it seems like the real Charlotte wasn’t all that great either.
There is also a possibility that the real Charlotte brain is buried deep in the host body because there is a lot of conflict between the host inside and “Charlotte” — leading to the host ripping at her skin and having a bit of a breakdown. Feels a bit Get Out-y, like the real Charlotte is in the sunken place, but it might be what they are trying to do.
Host Charlotte must also deal with trouble at work — namely, micro-transactions happening under the radar took control of the majority of Delos stock so they can’t privatize and there is a mole feeding data and information to everyone’s nemesis, Serac.
Turns out Charlotte was the mole — we could have guessed that since we saw her sending data out last season. Serac knows that Dolores holds the key to the data, but does he know that there is a host inside Charlotte? Plus, someone on her team found a video that the real Charlotte made before she died, which might put host Charlotte in a weird area.
Dolores’ storyline picks up where we left off: Caleb called 911 and EMTs come to the rescue (they are the real heroes!). Unfortunately, the ambulance is overrun by some bitcoin criminals who are searching for Dolores — they shoot both EMTs (they were just trying to do their job!) before Dolores can kill them. She tells Caleb to go off the grid but he’s caught saying goodbye to his mom at the hospital. He ends up hanging off the side of his construction site by a couple more bitcoin criminals who are looking for Dolores.
Caleb refuses to tell them where she is and so he is about to have a “workplace accident” when his robot coworker arrives to save the day. Oh, did I say save the day? I meant, he arrives to get thrown from the building immediately and crushed. Another innocent life lost. Luckily, Dolores was not far behind and she is a much better equipped robot than his coworker, so she killed the kidnappers and rescued Caleb very easily.
She takes him to a diner where she reveals that she knows everything about the worst day of his life, then to make this date even worse, takes him to the pier where he will likely kill himself in 10–12 years. Nice! She explains that the statistics machine has created an exact replica of this world and they use that replica to run their predictive analysis. Then, they take those results and use them to make decisions in this world. So, the reason why his life sucks and why he can’t get a better job is that they won’t invest in building him up because the model says it is not worth it.
I loved this connection because it explains why they made Caleb’s day look like the day of a host in the park. It is what I thought, his life is stuck in a never-ending loop, the same as Dolores waking up, going downstairs, and eventually being raped and potentially murdered. Without opportunities for change, Caleb’s life would lead to suicide as predicted. Needless to say, Caleb is joining the revolution.
Looks like next week we will see the return of the Man in Black and we will likely learn more about how Serac plans to use Maeve to get the data out of Dolores. Seems like all will be connected soon!
